Many of you have asked me how I built my Instagram audience. There are a lot of technical posts out there I’d highly recommend reading, google is your friend. That being said, I want to dive deeper about the unspoken rules of Instagram and the blogging world.
At the end of the day blogging isn’t just about getting a bunch of followers, and if you approach it the right way, you’ll succeed faster.
Rule #1: Good content is king.
Don’t focus on followers, focus on producing consistently high quality content. Good work is the top consistent trait I find in my favorite bloggers. Luck/money and other x factors may help, but hard work is never missing from the equation.
Rule #2: There are karma politics.
Sometimes you need to give more without expecting anything in return. When you’re first starting out, I’d highly recommend being generous. That’s the whole point of blogging anyways, being able to share and encouraging of others.
If you want to show that you care, try to read what they’re saying. Don’t just comment on people’s posts with one liners. Make a thoughtful comment. Get to know people, you’ll never know what kind of doors they will open for you in the long run.
Lastly, congratulate them if they’re doing well, trust me it will feel good. And they will remember. A good chunk of my time is still spent on catching up and engaging with blogs I follow.
Rule #3: You’re your own competition.
Yes the next person could be growing faster than you, but comparing yourself to other people is unhealthy and unproductive. Your goal should be to make sure you’re a better person than yesterday.
If you team up with people instead of getting competitive, it will get you even further than you think.
Rule #4: Have a great support network.
You’re going to be dealing with a lot of problems on a day to day basis and you need positive people around for love and support. Of course, don’t forget to cherish your support network, because they’re putting up with your crazy adventures after all!
Rule #5: Don’t plagiarize.
You’d be surprised to know how many people do this one. Even when you think no one noticed, someone will find out. Rule of thumb is, credit if you’re reposting someone else’s photo. You don’t want bad karma following you around, plus they’d appreciate you for it.
Rule #6: Be authentic.
It’s natural to think that by doing the same thing that’s working well for others is a good way to make it, but in the long run, you need to figure out how to differentiate yourself. For instance, instead of finding inspiration on Instagram, go to a museum or watch a movie.
What makes blogging so great is the infinite opportunities of creativity, so why copy something that’s already been done? There’s no fun in that and it won’t get you very far.
Rule #7: Pay it forward.
Don’t forget the people who helped you get here, it’s so hard to do it by yourself after all. Always pay it forward.
Rule #8: Have fun!
Because life is too short to take it too seriously. Have a little fun! Your readers will appreciate it as well.
